AVILOVA (1918) - State Prize Winner of the USSR (1975), Honoured Scientist of Ukraine (1982), Honoured Doctor of Ukraine (1962), Doctor of Medical Science (1974), Professor (1975), Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Pulmonology (1975-1988). She graduated Smolensky Medical Institute in 1941 and defended her Doctor's Dissertation "Resection and Plasty of Bronchi and Mediastinal Tracheas" (1974). Disciple of Acad. M.M. Amosov. Author of about 300 scientific works, including 2 monographs. Scientific direction - reconstructive surgery of the trachea, bronchi, oesophagus. Founder of scientific school of reconstructive surgery of the trachea and bronchi. 1 Doctor's and 19 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under her supervision. Disciples - Prof. M.M.  Mykola M. AMOSOV (1913-2002) - Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1969), Corresponding-Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Russia (1961), Honoured Scientist of Ukraine (1959), Hero of Socialist Labour (1973), Lenin Prize (1961) and State Prize Winner (1978), Doctor of Medical Science, Professor, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery (1955-1970). Graduated from Arkhangelsk Medical Institute (1939). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation " Pneumoectomy and Resection of the Lungs in Tuberculosis" (1952). Author of over 350 scientific works, including 17 monographs. One of the founders of pulmonary and cardiac surgery in the former USSR. Developed new methods of operations on the lungs, surgical treatment of heart diseases. The first in the world to create and introduce in practice antithrombic prostheses of cardiac valves. Author of original devices of artificial blood circulation. Organized a Centre of Cardio-Vascular Surgery in Ukraine. Founder of Ukrainian school of biomedical and psychological cybernetics. Participant of the Great Patriotic war. Decorated with 2 Lenin Orders, the Order of Patriotic war, 2 Orders of the Red Star, Medals.

 Oleksandr I. ARUTYUNOV (1904-1975) - Honoured Scientist of Ukraine (1954), Full Member of the AMS of the USSR (1967), Doctor of Medical Science, Professor (1945), the first Head of the Department of Neurosurgery (1945-1960). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Firearm Wounds of Great Vessels and their Surgical Treatment" (1944). Disciple of Prof. M.O. Bogoraz and Acad. M.N. Burdenko - Founder of Ukrainian Research Institute of Neurosurgery (1950-1964), leading neurosurgeon of Health Ministry of Ukraine. Author of 200 scientific works, including 4 monographs. Scientific direction - brain tumours, surgical cerebro-vascular pathology, intracranial hypertension, phasing of tumour process, cerebral blood circulation, cerebral metabolism, pain surgery, functional neurosurgery. 8 Doctor's and 48 Candidate's Dissertations were defended under his supervision.  Vyacheslav V. BEREZHNOY (1938)- Honoured Doctor of Ukraine (1998), Doctor of Medical Science (1982), Professor (1988), Head of the Department of Pediatrics-2 (1990). Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute in 1962. Defended his Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Staphylococcal Infection with Prolonged Recidivating and Chronic Process in Children". Disciple of Kyiv paediatric school, disciple of Prof. P.M. Hudzenko. Author of over 150 scientific works including 1 monograph, 7 inventions. Scientific direction - investigation of staphylococcal infections, gastroduodenal diseases in children, paediatric cardiorheumatology. 2 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under his supervision. Leading Paediatrician of Health Ministry of Ukraine (1989).

 Volodymyr O. BOBROV (1943) - Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1990), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1991), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (1993), Doctor of Medical Science (1980), Professor (1981), Head of the Department of Cardiology and Functional Diagnosis (1985). Graduated from Dnipropetrovsk Medical Institute (1966). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Systemic Arterial Hypertension in Rheumatologic Heart Diseases" (1980). Disciple of Prof. B.N. Bezborod'ko. Author of 725 scientific works, including 15 monographs, 17 inventions. Scientific direction - problems of clinical arrhythmology, arterial hypertension and ischemiology, emergency cardiology, reversible and irreversible ischemic syndromes. 32 Doctor's and 78 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under his supervision. His disciples - Professors S.N. Sorvanets, I.M. Fushtey, M.I. Shved. Director of Research Institute of Cardiology named after N.D. Strazhesko (1986-1998).  Fedir R. BOGDANOV (1900-1973) - Honoured Scientist of Russian Federation, Corresponding Member of the AMS of the USSR (1952-1957), Doctor of Medical Science (1973), Professor (1938), Head of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department (1958-1973). Graduated from Moscow Medical Institute (1925). Defended his Dissertation "Intraarticular lesions" for the degree of Doctor of Medical Science (1937). Disciple of Prof. K.F. Vegner, V.D. Chaklin. Author of over 250 works including 7 monographs. Scientific direction - problems of metalloosteosynthesis, osteoplasty, treatment of foot diseases and lesions, dysplastic and degenerative-dystrophic articular disorders, amputation and prothetics. 77 Candidate's and 30 Doctor's Dissertations were performed under his supervision. Disciples - Prof. I.T. Sklyarenko, V.N. Levenets, I.H. Hertsen, V.A.Popov, etc. Participant of the Great Patriotic War, head surgeon of Ural Military District (1941-1948).  Vasyl D. BRATUS' (1916) - Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1972), Doctor of Medical Science (1963), Professor (1963), State Prize Winner of Ukraine (1981) and O.O. Bogomolets Prize of the AS of Ukraine (1969), Head of the Department of Surgery-1 (1958). Graduated from Kuibyshev Military Medical Academy (1940). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Surgical Treatment of Thermic burns" (1962). Disciple of Prof. M.N. Akhutin, N.S. Kolomiychenko. Author of over 200 scientific works including 7 monographs devoted to surgical treatment of digestive tract diseases, in particular, ulcerated disease, cholecystites, burns, history of development of medical science and public health in Ukraine. Participant of the Great Patriotic war. Decorated with Lenin Order, the Orders of the Red Banner of Labour, October Revolution, the Red Banner, Patriotic war, Medals. Director of Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (1957-1959). Minister of Ukrainian Health Ministry (1954-1956, 1968-1975).

 Solomon N. VAYSBLAT (1888-1965) - Honoured Scientist of Ukraine (1947), Professor, Head of Maxillo-Facial Surgery Department (1931-1950). Disciple of Prof. I.O. Zavyalov. Author of over 120 scientific works including 4 monographs. Scientific direction - rational methods of anesthesia in stomatology, oncology, traumatology of maxillo-facial area. Proposed methods of local conductive anesthesia in maxillo-facial surgery and adjacent regions.

Volodymyr Kh. VASYLENKO (1897-1987) - Hero of Socialist Labour (1967), Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Russia (1957), Doctor of Medical Science (1940), Professor (1940), Head of the Department of Therapy-1 (1935-1941). Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute (1922). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Materials about metabolism in chronic circulation insufficiency" (1940). Disciple of the Academicians F.G. Yanovsky and M.D. Strazhesko. Author of over 200 scientific works including monographs and manuals. Scientific direction - multivarious, but the problems of cardiology take a particular place. Classification of circulatory deficiency, adopted by XII All-Union Congress of Therapeutics, was suggested by him and Academician N.D. Stashes (1935). Developed the study about myocardiodystrophy and heart diseases. Contributed greatly to the development of vital problems of gastroenterology, renal and pulmonary pathology. Trained a big cohort of clinicians. Among his disciples - Prof. Ye. I. Likhtenshtein. Participant of the Great Patriotic war. Head Therapeutist of North-Caucasian and the I Ukrainian fronts. Decorated with 3 Lenin Orders, the Orders of October Revolution, the Red Banner, the Red Banner of Labour, Patriotic war (I and II class), Medals.

 Yuriy V. VORONENKO

Was born on January, 20, 1950, in the village Zhovtneve, Koropsky district, Chernihivska oblast. Graduated from National Medical Institute with Honours (1973).

In the years 1973-1976 he studied as a post-graduate student of the Department of Social Hygiene and Organization of Public Health Services of this Institute, in 1976-1983 he worked as an assistant, in 1983-1990 – as a senior lecturer, in 1990-2003 he chaired this department of this very institute (which was renamed into the National medical university named after A.A.Bogomolets in 1995). 1995-2002 – he chaired the Central Administration Board of Education, Science and Information-Analytical Maintenance of the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine. Since 2002 he has been the rector of Kyiv Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education named after P.L.Shupyk the MH of Ukraine (since 27.03.2006 National Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education named after P.L.Shupyk), and (since 2003) has been chairing the department of health management of the Academy.

Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (it is elected on November, 6, 2003) on the speciality "Social Medicine".

Reasoned scientifically the organization of specialized help in case of burns and specifications for need in combustiological beds and doctors - combustiologists.

Established the regularity of burns epidemiology in Ukraine - their frequency in various regions and groups of urban and rural population, created a medico -geographical map of burns traumatism, proved the regularities of complex influence of the household, professional, climate and geographical and economic factors over the level of burns traumatism.

Developed the system of burns prophylaxis and the model of staging treatment of injured in both wartime and peacetime. Reasoned the territorial schemes for location of combustiological centres and distinguished the factors influencing the treatment quality. Developed the method for analysis of combustiological centres’ activities.

He is one of the leading co-authors of the Concept of Development of Health Care of Population of Ukraine, of many Presidential Decrees, by-laws of the Cabinet of Ministers over the health care issues. On the basis of his scientific proposals, a decision of the Government of Ukraine was taken on introduction of a radically new mechanism for diagnosing the level of knowledge and skills of medical specialists – the licensed medical test.

Basic directions of scientific activities: social problems of medicine and organization of health care, strategy and tactics of development of the sphere of health care, specialized medical attention, medical statistics, rationalization of the contents and organization of training of nurses, pharmacologists, and doctors.

Author of over 250 scientific works including 8 textbooks, 15 educational manual editions, 29 monographs and chapters. Prepared 7 doctors of medical science and 7 candidates of medical science.

Participates in the activities of scientific domestic and foreign communities, organizations, editorial staffs, and editorial boards. Is a head of the Directorate of medical and biological sciences of the Centre for international co-operation of Universities of Central, Southern and Eastern Europe at the Bari University (Italy), a member of the Presidium of the senatus academicus of the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine, a member of the Problem Committee on social hygiene and health care organization at the Ministry of Health Care and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the chairperson of the specialized board on defence of theses at the Kyiv Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education and a member of the specialized board at the National Medical University. The chief editor of the journal “Medical Education“, the substitute of the chief editor of the journal “Problems of Medical Science and Education“, a member of editorial boards and editorial staffs of several medical scientific journals.

Was awarded the Order of Merits of the 3rd degree and the Order of the Saint Prince Volodymyr the Great, medals “In the name of 1500th anniversary of Kyiv”, “For Assistance in Protection of the State Border of Ukraine”, “Albert Schweizer Gold Medal”.

 Ihor M. HANDZHA (1925) - Honoured Science Worker of Ukraine (1987), Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher School (19993), Doctor of Medical Science (1961), Professor (1963), Head of therapeutic Department (1962-1993), graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute (1946). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Condition of Cardio-Vascular System in Hepatic and Biliary Diseases" (1959). Disciple of therapeutic scientific school, Post-Graduated student of Acad. M.D. Strazhesko. Author and co-author of over 350 scientific works, including 18 monographs. Major scientific direction - investigation of cardiac muscle inflammatory diseases, rheumatism, diffuse connective tissue diseases, atherosclerosis pathogenesis, hepatic disorders, chronic biliary tracts diseases, vasculites of vessels of lesser circulation. 10 Doctor's and 21 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under his supervision. Disciples - Professors I.P. Lerner, M.D. Kohut, P.S. Fedyshyn, N.K. Furkalo, H.I. Lysenko, etc.

 Eduard V. GUILLING (1937) - Corresponding-Member of the AMS of Ukraine (1993), Doctor of Medical Science (1973), Professor (1978), the first Head of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology (1985-1997). Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute (1960). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Experimental Study of Allergy Role in the Pathology of Sound and Vestibular Analyzers" (1972). Disciple of Kyiv scientific school of pathophysiology, of Acad. M.M. Sirotin and Corresponding-Member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences M.N. Zayko. Author of 220 scientific works including 2 monographs. Scientific direction - pathological physiology of regional immunity systems. 5 Doctor's and 30 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under his supervision. State Prize Winner of Ukraine (1978). Decorated with Medals. Since 1996 has lived abroad.

 Mykhail K. DAL' (1902-1984) - Honoured Scientist of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Science (1935), Professor (1936), Head of Pathological Anatomy Department (1944-1937). Graduated from the Crimean and Kazan' Universities. Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "About Influence of Various Dusts on the Body of Experimental Animals. Experimental Investigation" (1935). Representative of St. Petersburg scientific school of pathoanatomists, disciple of Prof. H.S. Kulish and F.Ya. Chystovych. Author of 140 scientific works including 2 monographs. Scientific direction - elaboration and improvement of prosection, pathoanatomical diagnosis. 14 Doctor's and 46 Candidate's Dissertations were performed under his supervision. Disciples - Professors N.O. Maksymovych, V.P. Yemaykina. Participant of the Great Patriotic war.

 Gayk A. DASHTAYANTS (91924-1978) - State Prize Winner of Ukraine awarded post-humously), Doctor of Medical Science (1960), Professor (1961), Head of the Department of Therapy-2 (1962-1978), Graduated from Petersburg Military Medical Academy (1946). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Severe New Data Concerning Sternal Puncture Use in Clinic and Experiment" (1959). Disciple of Academician M.I. Arynkin, I.A. Kasyrsky. Author of 143 scientific works including 9 monographs. Scientific direction - problems of hematology, therapy, oncology. 4 Doctor's and 24 Candidate's Dissertations were performed under his supervision. Disciples - Professors Ye.V. Andruschenko, O.M. Sydorenko, A.F. Romanova. Participant of the Great Patriotic war. Decorated with Medals. Honours Worker of Public Health.

 Valeriy S. DZYURAK (1939) - Honoured Doctor of Ukraine (1999), Doctor of Medical Science (1988), Professor (1995), Head of the Department of Urology (1993). Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute (1969). Defended his Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Concentration of Hydrogen Ions of Urine and its Proteolysis in Pathogenesis and Treatment of Renal Lithiasis" (1988). Scientific direction - investigation of pathogenesis and development of treatment and prophylaxis of recidivating lithogenesis. 1 Doctor's and 6 Candidate's Dissertations have been fulfilled under his supervision. Head of Problematic Commission on the Issues of Urology and Nephrology in Health Ministry and Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (1993). Excellent Worker of Public Health.

 Viktor H. DROBOT'KO (1885-1966) - Academician of the AS of Ukraine (1948), Doctor of Biological Science (without defending a dissertation)(1936), Professor (1936), Head of the Department of Microbiology (1944-1953). Graduated from St. Volodymyr University, Medical Faculty (1913). Author of 160 scientific works including 10 monographs. One of initiators of bacteriophage investigations in the USSR and Ukraine. Discovered the phenomenon of pseudobacteriophagia in pyocyanic bacillus. He had priority in decoding stakhibotriotoxicosis etiology and developing a new direction - investigation of toxic fungi (mycotoxicoses). Devoted much attention to the problems of chemotherapy of infectious diseases. Investigated antimicrobial properties of higher plants. Decorated with 2 Lenin Orders, the Order of Red Banner of Labour, Medals. Director of the Institute of Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1944-1962).

 Danylo D. DROZDOV (1923) - Honoured Doctor of Ukraine (1973), Doctor of Medical Science (1973), Professor (1985), Head of the Department of Therapy-3 91980-1991). Graduated from Military-Navy Faculty of the Petersburg Medical Institute (1953). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Gaseous Metabolism in Patients with Hypertonic Disease". Disciple of Scientific school of Institute of Clinical Medicine named after M.D. Strazhesko. Author of 125 scientific works including 1 monograph. Scientific direction - internal diseases, cardiology, rheumatology. 1 Doctor's and 3 Candidate's Theses have been performed under his supervision. Participant of the Great Patriotic War. Decorated with the Orders of Patriotic War, the Red Star, Medals. Honorary Diploma of Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

 Kopstyantyn F. DUPLENKO (1899-1990) - Honoured Scientist of Ukraine (1972), Candidate of Medical Science (without defending a dissertation) (1935), Associate Professor (1939), Doctor of Medical Science (1965), Professor (1966). The first Head of the Department of Social Hygiene and Public Health Organization, Professor of the Department (1938-1969). Graduated from Dnipropetrovsk University (1923) and Dnipropetrovsk Medical Institute (1929). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Development of Public Health and Medical Science in Ukraine Within the Period of Building up of Socialism". Author of over 150 scientific works. Scientific direction - theory of social hygiene and public health organization, history of medicine and public health in Ukraine. Decorated with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1953), Medals.

 Andriy S. YEFIMOV (1928) - Honoured Worker of Science and Technology (1966), State Prize Winner of Ukraine in the field of Science and Technology (1985), Academician of the AMS of Russia (1989), Doctor of Medical Science (1966), Professor (1970), State Prize Winner of Ukraine (1980), Head of Endocrionology Department (1992). Graduated from Gorkiy Medical Institute (1952). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Endemic Goiter. Importance of Neuro-Regulatory disturbances in Pathogenesis, Clinical Picture and Treatment of Goiter" (1964). Disciple of Professors A.I. Gefter and V.G. Vorgalik. Author of 320 scientific works including 11 monographs, 2 manuals. Scientific direction - clinical and experimental diabetology. Elaborated a new clinico-pathogenic classification of diabetes mellitus and diabetic angiopathies. 11 Doctor's and 48 Candidate's Theses have been performed under his supervision.
