Department of Toracal Surgery and PulmonologyTeaching Staff:
History Data: The Department was organized in 1975 on the base of the thoracic ward of the clinical hospital “Medical campus”. The first clinical base of the department was the children’s hospital No. 7, and in 1986 the Department moved to the Clinical hospital No. 17, and since that time it has been functioning as the Kyiv City Pulmonary Center, which was reorganized into the scientific-practical center “Thoracic Surgery and Pulmonology”. The founder and the first head of the Department was Merited Worker of Science, the USSR State Prize Laureate, Merited Doctor of Ukraine, Professor O. M. Avilova, who was running the Department in 1975 – 1988. She was a pioneer in the sphere of the reconstructive surgery of trachea and bronchus in the former USSR, and the founder of the general thoracic surgery in Ukraine. She prepared a new generation of scientists, leading thoracic surgeons in Ukraine, such as Prof. A.V. Makarov, Prof. M.M. Bagirov, Prof. V.G. Getman, and 16 Candidates of Medical Sciences. The first lecturers of the Department were E.V. Andrushchenko, (physician-pulmonologist, 1975-1978, who was the head of the therapeutics department-2 in 1978); N.I. Mokryk (1975-1985) - a thoracic surgeon, the founder of pediatric pulmonology and thoracic surgery in Ukraine; E.P. Kravchenko (1975-1977) - an experienced anesthesiologist, who was the head of the reanimation ward of the Department base; E.V. Golovskiy (1975) - a thoracic surgeon. In 1988-2009 the Department headed by Prof. A.V. Makarov, the student of Prof. Avilova. Since 2009 the Department is headed Professor Vadym G. Getman. Teaching and Methodological Work: The following courses are held in the department: Specialization: in pulmonology, thoracic surgery, pediatric pulmonology. Pre-certification: in pulmonology, thoracic surgery, pediatric pulmonology. Topical Advanced: “Issues of pulmonology”, “Actual problems of pulmonology”, “Bronchologia”, ”Emergency Conditions of Multiple Trauma”. Clinical residencies and post-graduate education, Scientific Research Activities: The scientific theme of the Department is “Reconstructive and regenerative surgery during posttraumatic complications and diseases of thorax” The main scientific developments of the Department: - Reconstructive and regenerative trachea-bronchial surgery during tumors and stenosis - Reconstructive and regenerative surgery of posttraumatic complications of respiratory tract and thorax skeleton - Diagnosis and treatment of purulent diseases of lungs, pleura and mediastinum - Diagnosis and treatment of benign diseases of gullet - Management of multiple and associated traumas Clinical work: The clinical hospital base of the Department includes 6 units: adult thoracic surgery (60 beds), pediatric thoracic surgery (40 beds), multiple trauma (40 beds), clinical pulmonology (60 beds), the intensive care ward (16 beds) and the endoscopy ward. There are also the imaging service with 3 X-ray rooms, CAT scanner and US scanner available around o’clock, the physical therapy service including 3 inhalation therapy units. The cytology, pathology and microbiology units are also available. There are there operating rooms, for 4 tables each. In 2000 the Thoracic Cavity emergent surgery Ward was reorganized into the multiple traumas Ward. There is also a service for out-patients; it is possible to get consultations from a pulmonary physician, a general thoracic surgeon, a TB physician or a thoracic oncologist during week-days from 9:00 till 18:00. Adult and pediatric thoracic surgery Ward is the worldwide leading center in reconstructive trachea-bronchial surgery, including all types of laryngeal-tracheal, carinal and bronchial original procedures. Other types of general thoracic surgical procedures are also done in the ward: Surgery of esophagus – all types of resection and reconstruction Surgery of mediastinum – all types of procedures Surgery of congenital pulmonary malformations Treatment of mediastinitis Treatment of purulent pulmonary and pleural diseases Pulmonary resection-lobectomy and bilobectomy, pneumonectomy, segmental resection. Multiple trauma Ward Surgery of thorax traumas – surgery of the chest wall, lungs, trachea and major bronchi, heart, diaphragm, esophagus, thoracic duct, etc. Blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma Surgery of the orthopedic trauma including pelvic fractures Management of head trauma and injuries to the spine with anterior surgical procedures performed Thoracoscopy and laparoscopy are widely used for diagnosis and treatment of thoracic and abdominal trauma and diseases. Clinical Pulmonology Ward Pneumonia COPD Pulmonary malformations Disseminated lung diseases Asthma Plevritis of the unknown origin Pulmonary embolism Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Ward The main problem, investigated at the Ward is the improvement of respiratory support: HFJV in postoperative or posttraumatic period associated with respiratory insufficiency Ventilation delivery during reconstructive tracheal and/or bronchial surgical procedures Prophylaxis and treatment of ventilator associated pneumonia Treatment of traumatic shock in multiple traumas Improvement in management of adult respiratory distress syndrome The faculty of the Department has published 443 papers, 14 manuals and 6 practical recommendations. 32 innovations have been patented. In 1975 Prof. Avilova O.M. was awarded with the USSR State Prize. In 1997 Prof. Makarov A.V. and Prof. Bagirov M.M. were awarded with the State Prize of Ukraine. International activities: The faculty of the Department annually participates in conferences abroad with oral presentations. The members have broad contacts with colleagues from USA, Germany, France, Italy, Austria and many other countries. Prof. M.M.
