Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology No. 2Teaching Staff:
History Data: The Department was founded in 1926 and began working as a part of the Institute of Orthopedics. Professor I.I.Frumin, who had been heading it during 1926-1936, was the founder of the Department. In subsequent years, the Department was headed by professors G.E.Frumina (1936-1941), B.K.Babych (1944-1952), K.M.Klimov (1952-1957), O.G.Eletsky (1957-1958), F.R.Bogdanov (1958-1973), M.V.Novikov (1973-1988), V.A.Popov (1988-2007). Since 2007 Professor Vykola L. Ankin has been running the Department and he fills this position till now. From the very beginning of its existence, the main problem the Department was the organization of an orthopedic-traumatology service in Ukraine and orthopedic specialists training (I.I.Frumin). The school of children orthopedics was founded by Prof. G.E.Frumina and it was dealing with the problems of locomotor system apparatus congenital defects, congenial femur dislocation, bandy leg defects, and poliomyelitis consequences, etc. After the World War II (1941-1945), research activities of the Department were primarily concerned with issues of the bones/joints tuberculosis treatment and post-bullet wounding osteomyelitis (B.K.Babych); false joints and bone defects/fractures management (K.M. Klimov); as well as the regeneration and stimulation of the bone tissue (O.G.Eletsky). Within the 1958-1973 period, the main attention of the Department was focused on issues related to the metal osteosynthesis, bone plastics and dysplastic and degenerative-dystrophic diseases of joints (F.R.Bogdanov). In the following years, the guideline for scientific-practical activities was further elaboration of issues pertaining to the metal osteosynthesis (N.V.Novikov); study and management of the knee joint deforming arthrosis, the use of the biomechanics in a surgery of degenerative-dystrophic joint injuries, performance of a hip and knee joint endoprosthetics, and attainment of a stable functional osteosynthesis of intra-joint fractures (V.A.Popov). In the course of its history, altogether 37 Doctor of Medical Sciences and 82 Candidate of Medical Sciences theses were prepared and defended under a supervision of the scientific staff of the Department. Teaching and Methodological Work: The following courses are held at the department: Specilization: in “Traumatology and Orthopedics”. Pre-certification: in “Traumatology and Orthopedics”. Topical Advanced: “The Osteosynthesis in Traumatology and Orthopedics” and “Endoprosthesis of the Hip and Knee Joints”. Internship. Clinical residency and post-graduate education. Scientific Research Activities: In 2001 the Department completed the planned research work on a topic “Effectiveness of correcting osteotomies in deforming arthrosis of a lower extremity”. In 2006 completed the planned research work on a topic “Surgical treatment of intra-joint fractures”. For 2007 was planned and is being successfully fulfilled research work on a topic “Surgical treatment of highenergy trauma of a lower extremity“. In parallel, research on issues pertaining to osteosynthesis, endoprosthetics, knee joint instability and foot pathology are being performed. Clinical work: The Department has two treatment bases: the Kyiv Regional Clinical Hospital with the capacity of 80 beds (50 for children and 30 for adults), Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 4 (80 beds), Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 9 (60 beds) and Department of Microsurgery of Ukrainian Special Children’s Hospital (30 beds). Both of these facilities have modern diagnostic equipment, devices and laboratories. At one of them - the Kyiv Region Clinical Hospital - computer and magnetic-resonance tomographs operate. Annually, nearly 400 surgical interventions are performed on patients with bones and joints diseases, including the surgery (with an account being taken of pathogenetic data and biomechanical estimates) of a deforming knee joint arthrosis and an endoprosthesis of the hip and knee joints. International activities: The Department maintains fruitful collaborative relations with the colleagues of the Colorado University and Health Center in Denver, U.S.A. The Head of the Department, Professor Vasyl A. Popov, has been elected a Full Member of the International Society of Surgical Orthopedics and Traumatology (SICOT). He also holds the membership with a European Society of Sports Traumatology and Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA). Address: 1, Baggautivs’ka Str., 04107 Kyiv Ukraine |
