History Data: The Department was founded in 1936 on the base of the Kyiv Regional Hospital. The first head of the department was Professor M.I.Kolomiychenko. Then the heads of department were professors V.D.Bratus’, V.I. kimov, D.F.Scrypnicenko. Teaching and Methodological Work: The following training courses are developed in the department: Pre-certification: in Topical Advanced: “Fundamentals of vascular surgery for general surgeons”, “Fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery”, “Fundamentals of plastic surgery”, “Emergency abdominal surgery”. Internship Scientific Research Activities: There were 14 scientific research themes performed since the beginning of the Department. During the last 10 years, there were performed the following scientific research themes: “Surgical treatment of combined pathology of gastroduodenal zone and septic complications under radionuclide influence ” (1990-1995); “Emergency abdominal surgery of elderly and aged patients” (1991-1994); “Complex treatment of peritonitis and prophylactic of its complications with the use of chemical-sorptive and bio-sorptive medicines” (1996-1997), “Emergency abdominal surgery” (1996-2001); “Optimization of diagnostic and treatment tactics and elaboration of rehabilitation system of patients with acute abdominal surgical pathology ” (2000-2004); “Intestinal obstruction of tumor origin as emergency surgical problem ” (1997-2003). The department teaching staff have published 1672 scientific works, including 50 monographs, 18 manuals, 23 methodical recommendations, developed 84 Patents. 18 Doctor theses and 39 Candidate theses were defended, and 6 Candidate theses are being carried out. The major achievements of the department are: - Development of the complex diagnostic and treatment program at acute peritonitis. - Development of introduction in practice the complex treatment of intra-abdominal complications after abdominal operations with the use of relaparotomy and its implementation into practice. - Development of the differential treatment tactics for acute cholecystitis on the basis of clinical-morphological forms of disease with prevailing use of mini- invasive techniques and its implementation into practice. - The technique of right hemicolectomy for small intestine obstruction. - The technique of intraoperative decompression and intestinal lavage for obstructive ileus. - The techniques of intestinal anastomosis forming. - Development and introduction in practice the complex sorptive-detoxicant “Imosdynit” for prophylactic and treatment of anaerobic infection. Clinical work: The Department works on 2 clinical bases: the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 6 “Medical campus” and the Kyiv City Burns Center in the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 2. Following treatment is provided at the departments: - Operations for gastrointestinal diseases. - Operations, including mini-invasive surgery for biliary pathology - Surgical treatment of acute pancreatitis and its complications. - Treatment of burns and its complications - Plastic surgery - Operations for acute abdominal diseases - Proctologic operations - Treatment of soft tissue infections - Lower extremities artery and veins surgery The department stuff annually performs more than 1, 500 operations, and more than 5, 000 consultations.
