Department of Radiology

Teaching Staff:

History Data:

The Department of Radiology (then named rontgenology) was created in 1937; it was reorganized into the Department of Rontgenology and Medical Radiology in 1954 in connection with the development of medical radiology. For associated teaching of rontgenology and medical radiology at one department, it became necessary to install special radiological apparatus with particular conditions of its use. It made the performance of pedagogical process more complicated and in 1957, the Department was subdivided into 2 independent departments: the Department of Rontgenology and that of Medical Radiology (with a course of radiation hygiene included in 1992).In 1999. The Academic Board of P.L. Shupyk KMAPGE decided to reunite 2 departments and to create one Department of Radiology (sections of Roentgenology and Radiology). In 2008 one department was subdivided again on two – Radiology and Radio-Diagnostics.

Scientific Research Activities:

During different years the Radiology department stuff was engaged in developing next basic scientific directions:

· Possibilities of an single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in diagnostics of parenchymatous organs diseases

· Effective choice of diagnostics imaging in pathology of central nervous system, head and neck in clinical practice

·  Optimization and standardizing of radiotherapy procedures

·  Radionuclide therapy of the thyroid cancer and it’s metastasis

·  Study of medical aspects of consequences of Chernobyl NPP crash

Now, the radiology department is carried on the official science work “ Methods of radio modification and supportive drug therapy at radio-and radionuclide therapy in patients with central nervous system, head and neck tumors

Every year, radiology department organizes 1-2 and take parts in 2-3 conferences (congresses, master classes) in the field of nuclear medicine, oncology, radiotherapy education. Each year the department stuff publicates 45-50 scientific works including monographs (22), text-books (2), education manual editions (12), collection of test questions (2), translations scientific lections and books (6); on international level 46 scientific works were published. The teaching stuff of the department had made 66 reports (during last 5 years), among them: on international level – 10, on interstate level – 6, state level – 26, regional level – 20, city level – 4. During last five years the department had received 5 inventions, one positive solution on the innovation, had offered 3 innovations and published 4 methodical recommendations.

During the 2005-2008, 3 doctor’s and 6 candidate’s dissertations were defended.

In 1998 and 2002, the teaching stuff of department had published the 2-volumes text-book “Radiology-Diagnostics” (vol.1 – 527 pages, vol.2 – 639 pages) – the first deep edition in Ukraine for education of radiologists and interns. Now we are preparing to issue this considerably recreated textbook (1324 pages)

In 2004, prof. D.Mechev with coll. was granted with the Diploma № 241 on Scientific Discovery in the field of radiotherapy (prognosis of negative reactions) and awarded of I.Pavlov and S. Kapitsy silver medals. In 2008, he was granted with the title “Le Chevalier” from Belgium Academy of Sciences

In 2004 under the supervision of radiology department, the new journal “Radiology Vistnyk” was founded.

Scientific and Technological Cooperation is kept with

The elaboration of basic software for a new national single-photon emission computer tomograph has been completed. The development of applied clinical programs packing is in progress (extra-plan scientific research work).

Clinical work:

The department of radiology provides consultative, diagnostic and clinical work at base (4) and extra-base (3) medical establishments. Annually, over 1,200 patients, including children, receive consultations and treatment (radiation therapy, radiotherapy by open isotopes); the patients undergo nuclear-medicine in-vivo and in-vitro investigations, and estimation of radionuclide presence in the human body.

The patients with malignant tumors of practically all localizations undergo radiation therapy at the City Oncological Hospital (one of the main bases of the department). Radio-therapy is carried out on modern gamma-therapeutic devices for distance and contact treatment (AGAT-R, ROCUS, AGAT-VU, Selectron, Teratron, Gammamed). Besides, there are 2 linear accelerators, which enables treating patients by means of highly energetic electrons and photons. The planning of radiation therapy is realized by a roentgenologic simulator and CT

If necessary, radiosensitizing of tumors – introtumoral introduction of radiomodificators, local hyperthermia of tumors, non-traditional fractionation of 24 hour dosage etc. are used in radiation therapy of patients.

The patients with cancer of thyroid, prostate and mammary glands with metastasis to osseous system are treated at the Clinic of open isotopes (131J, 32P, 89Sr). For treatment of patients with metastases to bones, radionuclide, hormone, bisphosphonates, radiomodificators and supportive drugs are used.
