History Data: The Department of Foreign Languages was created in 1962 under the instruction of the Public Health Ministry of the former USSR with the aim of training physicians and lecturers of medical disciplines for working abroad. The first Head of the Department was Valentyna I. Zinkevych, and from 1983 to 1999 the Department was headed by Tetyana I. Usova. During the period of its existence, over 2 thousand specialists had been trained, who worked in more than 30 countries of the world. From 1999 to 2005 the Section of Foreign Languages was functioning included into the the Department of Humanitarian Disciplines run by Professor Valentyn L. Kulinichenko. Since 2005 the Department of Foreign Languages has been continuing its activity as the autonomous Department. It has been run by Lada Yu. Lichman. The teaching staff members of the Department of Foreign Languages deal with the problem of improving the methods of teaching foreign languages, they perform vocabulary selection with the consideration of different medical specialities. They use modern teaching and learning technologies, new ways of presentation and activation of vocabulary-grammar material, which greatly contributes to the development of speaking skills. The teachers of foreign languages provide training for post-graduate students and competitors who intend to take candidate examinations in English, French, German and Russian. Foreign citizens with higher medical education, who graduated from higher educational institutions in their countries, are taught the Russian Language and are trained for taking candidate examinations. Competitive examinations in English, French, German, Russian (for foreigners) and Ukrainian are given for admitting the applicants to master’s and post-graduate courses. Teaching and Methodological Work: The following courses are conducted at the Department: Topical Advanced Training: “Training of personnel reserves of KMAPE. English language”; “Training of personnel reserves of KMAPE. French language”; “English for the professorial teaching staff”; “French for the professorial teaching staff” “Training of scientific personnel reserves of higher institutions. Russian for foreigners”. Scientific Research Activities: The Department’s scientific activities are aimed at at optimizing and intensifying teaching process, investigating modern concepts of foreign language teaching, searching and selecting medical terminology and grammar constructions from original scientific literature, investigating matters of the teaching techniques improvement and the system of teaching quality evaluation, realized in a great number of papers at symposia, conferences of different level.
