Department of Human Hygiene and EcologyTeaching Staff:
History Data: The Department was granted with its present name in 1993, when, by the decision of the Academic Council of the P.L. Shupyk Kyiv Medical Academy of Post-graduate Education, the Department of Communal Hygiene with a course of school hygiene (the founder and the first head – Corresponding Member of AMS of the USSR, professor D.M. Kaliuzhnyi, 1965), famous in both Ukraine and the former Soviet Union, was combined with the Department of General Hygiene and Toxicology of Chemical Substances (organized and headed in 1968 by the world famous scientist, director of the Research Institute of Hygiene and Toxicology of Pesticides, Polymeric Materials and Plastic Masses (VNIIGINTOKS) academician of AMS of the USSR, Professor L.I. Medvedunder the name “Department of Hygiene, Toxicology and Clinic of Poisoning by Pesticides”). From the moment of reorganization, the Department of Human Hygiene and Ecology is located on the base of the Ecohygiene and Toxicology Institute (the former VNIIGINTOKS), at present named after its founder, academician Lev I. Medved. During these years, a great contribution to the development of the Department, as well as to the formation of high prestige in pedagogical and scientific work was made by the former Department Heads: academician of USSR AMS M.G. Shandala, Professor O.G.Voloschenko, Professor N.A. Popovych; Professors O.M. Sydorenko, S.E.Katayeva, Assistant Professors L.P. Danylenko, G.I. Moskovko, L.S. Samosvat, and others. The Department has prepared about 9,000 specialists for the system of health protection and environmental protection, specialized in general and communal hygiene, children and teenagers’ hygiene, laboratory matter in a sanitary-epidemiological service, modern methods of examination of environmental subjects. The attainments and practical skills of specialists within the Department on a water-supply, soil and ambient air hygiene, a dwelling and common premises, treatment-and-prophylactic establishments hygiene, ecohygiene topical questions, hygiene and toxicology of pesticides use have been constantly improved. For the time being, the Department provides a postgraduate education of doctors-hygienists on general and environmental hygiene, occupational hygiene, doctors-laboratory assistants of sanitary-epidemiological service establishments, and specialists of other departmental organizations engaged in the determination of chemical substances in the environmental subjects, physical factors of environmental and industrial medium. Teaching and Methodological Work: The Department provides the following courses: Specialization: “General hygiene”, “Environmental sanitation”, “Occupational hygiene”, “Laboratory studies on the environmental chemical factors”, “Laboratory studies on the environmental physical factors”, “Laboratory studies on the environmental factors”, Pre-certification: “General hygiene”, “Environmental sanitation”, “Occupational hygiene”, “Laboratory studies on the environmental chemical factors”, “Laboratory studies on the environmental physical factors”, “Laboratory studies on the environmental factors”, Topical Advanced: “Hygiene of application and toxicology of pesticides”, “Hygienic evaluation of physical factors”, “Chemical factors hygiene and toxicology”, “Occupational hygiene in agriculture”, “Topical questions of ecohygiene”, “Laboratory air and water studies”, “Pesticides sanitary chemistry”, “Physical-chemical analysis techniques used in a sanitary chemistry”. May be studied on the self-sustained basis. Scientific Research Activities: The Department staff conducts the research work, the main directions of which being as follows: - Carrying out the necessary studies upon substantiation of hygienic standards and regulations, - Elaborating the new methods of examination of chemical pollutants contents in the environmental subjects (pesticides, break-down products of polymeric materials, food ingredients – colorants, antioxidants, flavorings, stabilizers of taste and consistence etc.). At present, the Department staff, under the instructions of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine, is conducting a scientific-research work of monitoring-analytical nature “System-functional analysis and the scientific substantiation of the activity of doctors of hygienic direction (doctors-laboratory assistants) for elaboration of professional-official requirements for Sanitary-Epidemiological Services of different levels of management”.
